The birth of computers has pushed the habits of our society. We now spend long hours sitting in front of our screens, reducing our mobility and this can have major consequences on our health.

For many years, doctors advised rest when we suffer from back pain. Today the trend has reversed. Indeed, it is now recommended to move as much as possible by continuing our daily business. Practicing regular exercise is also highly recommended to keep a healthy back.

The frequency of back pain is very high: 80% of the population is or will be affected one day. Most affected by this type of pain are individuals who work in jobs involving physical constraints (field hospital, transportation, public works …). The symptoms can be painful but are cured in about 95% of cases, however, they generally tend to become chronic.

What are the consequences for our health?

Today, we spend most of our time at work behind a screen, in transportation (car), watching TV … But the human body is not designed to spend so much time sitting. It needs to move to function correctly. A sedentary lifestyle leads to many health risks: increased cardiovascular risk, diabetes, obesity… In addition, it promotes musculoskeletal disorders (backache, neck, shoulder…) which are now responsible for a very large number of work stoppage. Low back pain and lumbago are two concrete examples of consequences caused by physical inactivity. They are characterized by intense pain in the lumbar vertebrae, a block in the back or the difficulty to achieve certain movements. Laying up when suffering from this type of pathology is not necessarily the best remedy. Indeed, it promotes recidivism and can evolve a common low back pain (mild when considered on time) in chronic low back pain.

How to address this phenomenon?

If you work in an office, we recommend you to take breaks every 2-3 hours to relax, walk a little and stretch. We also advise you to focus on standing during short journey by public transport.

All opportunities are good for exercise: choose the stairs to the elevator, walk the escalators down a subway station before his own, preferred walking or cycling for short trip (1-2 km) . At noon, shorten your lunch break for a walk.
Finally, regular physical activity (2 to 3 times per week) you will better your muscle back.
