It is very common to suffer from back pain during long car rides. These pains are mostly mechanical and due to poor posture, because your body is too static. Sitting for too long is not natural, so it is normal for your back to react. Indeed, in a seated position, all the body weight is only supported by the lower back and pelvis. This position causes overpressure in the lumbar vertebrae and intervertebral discs, which causes the pain you feel along your back.

FIND THE RIGHT POSITION

When driving, you may have a tendency to slouch, your spine then takes the form of a “C” instead of an “elongated S”. It is therefore important to adjust your seat properly so that it is at the right height and depth, so that your back stays straight. Also make sure that your legs are not too much bent.

If you are the driver

Take a few minutes before a long trip to settle in. A good adjustment of your seat will prevent you from having too much back pain.

First, it is advisable not to recline your seat too far back (20 degrees maximum) to keep your shoulders and back glued to the seat.

Position your hands at 10:10 am and make sure your arms are neither too tight nor too bent. Remember to adjust your mirrors correctly to keep your neck straight while maintaining a good view of your dashboard and what’s going on around you. If your car has armrests, make sure they are at the same height so that you don’t put your back in an unbalance position.

Remember to change position regularly by adjusting your seat, for example, or by making circular movements with your pelvis. You can also slightly lift your buttocks and tilt them back and forth. These exercises will help you avoid overpressure in the intervertebral discs and thus reduce your pain.

These gestures can relieve your back pain, but note that the most effective way is to take regular breaks to stretch your legs and walk a little.

MOVEMENTS TO AVOID DURING CAR RIDES

Some movements, when repeated too often, can cause back problems such as lumbago, so be careful with your posture. For example, when reversing, move your seat forward to get closer to the pedals and sit angled. This will limit the twisting of your back. You’ve just made a long trip and your trunk is loaded? Walk a little and make some softening moves before unloading your trunk. Then, use your trunk as a support when you bring a load back to you. Before lifting, bend your knees, take the load while pressing it against your lower abdomen and keeping your back straight. Finally, avoid rotating your torso.

WHAT OPTIONS SHOULD YOU CHOOSE FOR YOUR CAR TO LIMIT BACK PAIN?

A tall car will make your installation easier, but its shock absorbers can be very firm to avoid tilting too much in curves. Compact or 3-door cars are smaller and force you to twist to get in or out of the car. Soft seats look more comfortable but they do not hold as well as firm seats with a rim that properly hold the torso in curves. Some cars are also equipped with a heating or massage system for the back.
